This is the very tricky part. We all agree on that. The big difficulty is getting players on that level in a way that keeps them engaged. Getting there is what is difficult, and not fun right now. The most efficient way I can see to fix this, is to tweak gameplay, and find the perfect balance between initial fun and long-term mastery, the long fabled easy to learn, hard to master. The game has the second part, but lacks the first. I want to add the first while keeping the last.
I will be working on something better, and I will try to find the most effective way to build that, because, we have so many other priorities (demo, new player rooms, etc). But "nowhere near good enough" surprises me a bit, as it went pretty good during playtests until now.
What I noticed, is that it takes from 10min (for a seasoned RTS gamer) to about half an hour (for a generally less skilled player) of gameplay to understand the most important part of the games (stunning, grenade evasion, etc). Right now, this 10min to 30min time is rather not fun and frustrating, whether it's against another new player or a veteran. The key to improve this game is to make these 10 to 30min more fun. A full fledged tutorial can help and it will happen as I've said several times, but it's a lot of work to make it really fun, and I do not think it will be enough to solve this problem, basically it will cost us a lot of time, and it's not nearly guaranteed to help all that much. Noob rooms and the demo will definitely help, and the good news is that it's just around the corner, but we need to get activity a bit back up if we want this to work (so please help us boost activity, even if it's just sitting in the lobby).
We will be looking closely into that in the coming days.
Yes! Please, you can do so much to help us there. We are doing a lot on the "spread the word about the game side", but you can do a lot to help us as well, even if it's just spreading and talking about the game to communities around you guys. We will let you know when we are ready to push the demo and newbies rooms.
